Biography
Addie Hirschten is a contemporary painter, public speaker, art teacher, author of several books, and host of the Studio Alchemy Podcast.
Hirschten earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from Appalachian State University graduating in 2000. After working for a number of years as a children’s librarian, she went on to earn a Master of Library Science from Indiana University in 2010. When she moved to Indianapolis in 2011, she spent several years conducting performances for children in libraries throughout the state of Indiana as well as working as a public speaker for community organizations. These performances for children incorporated puppetry and traditional storytelling. After discovering a passion for teaching art with her work at the Indianapolis Art Center, she began painting more often and transitioned into being a full-time teaching artist. When working as an art teacher and workshop facilitator, Hirschten enjoys helping others to develop their own style and artistic voice, not just copy the instructor. While developing curriculum for the art classroom Hirschten wrote the book, “The Alchemy of Art: Stories for the Classroom,” a collection of folktales and true stories about artists. Other books written by Hirschten include “The Alchemy of Painting: Developing Your Style and Purpose,” “Start Selling Your Art: A Guide to Starting a Professional Art Business” and “The Alchemy of Symbols.” Later Hirschten went on to teach at a variety of art organizations as well as in her art gallery in Indianapolis.
Hirschten was honored to be the Ignite Maker in Residence with the Hamilton Public Library during the summer of 2023. She is a recipient of grants from the Arts Council of Indianapolis including the Public Arts for Neighborhoods Grant 2024, the Artist Restart Grant 2021, the Covid 19 Emergency Relief Fund Grant 2020, and the Wug Laku Artist Grant 2021. Additionally she was the recipient of the On-Ramp Fellowship Project Grant 2021 with the Indiana Arts Commission and was selected to be an artist in the Religion Spirituality, and the Arts Program with IUPUI Arts and Humanities, 2023. In 2016 Hirschten was given the First Place Teacher Award at "19 Stars of Indiana" Exhibit from the Indianapolis Museum of Art and in 2013 she earned the Hoosier Women Artist Award and Exhibition from Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann at the Indiana State House.
Hirschten’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows with the Harrison Center in Indianapolis in 2015 and 2024, the Indianapolis Art Center, Fletcher Place Arts Gallery, Garfield Park Center, the Hoosier Salon, the Indy Reads Bookstore, Petrov’s Gallery, the Broad Ripple Hotel, the Indiana Interchurch Center Gallery, Nickel Plate Arts Gallery and the Indiana University Gallery of Kokomo. Her work was featured in the Indianapolis Decorator Show House in 2022.
Hirschten’s style can range from abstract expressionist work to impressionism that reveres the sacred beauty of the natural world. She signs her paintings with the name Vita after the garden designer, Vita Sackville West. Hirschten is a Purdue University Extension Master Gardener and often incorporates botanical images into her artwork. Her other serious hobby is playing old-time and early blues style violin.
