Artist Addie Hirschten is a contemporary visionary expressionist painter, author and public speaker.  Formally with the Indianapolis Art Center, Hirschten teaches painting at the Studio Alchemy Gallery.

For many years Hirschten signed her paintings simply with the letter A.  More recently she began using the signature "Azhir" which is a combination of her initials and the name of a three headed dragon found in Zoroastrian mythology.

Hirschten earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from Appalachian State University graduating in the year 2000.  After working for a number of years as a children's librarian, she went on to earn a Master of Library Science at Indiana University.  When Hirschten moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 2011 she began conducting performances for children with her company, Fantastic Fables, as well as presenting sermons for Unitarian Universalist churches.  During the same time period she started painting daily and posting new paintings on her prolific blog.  Over the years, the style and purpose behind her paintings has changed drastically from abstract expressionist work, that focuses on art therapy influences; to impressionism, that reveres the sacred beauty of the natural world.

While working as an art teacher, Hirschten began compiling the book "The Alchemy of Art: Stories for the Classroom" combining her love of storytelling with the visual arts. The book includes fifty folktales and true stories about artists.  Inspired by the book Hirschten hosts the podcast "The Alchemy of Art" sharing art stories and philosophy with artists around the world.

Other books include "The Alchemy of Painting: Developing Your Style and Purpose,"  "The Happy Kite" and "Denis and His American Trunk."

Hirschten often speaks at schools, churches, libraries and graduations.  Her uplifting talks incorporate storytelling and appeal to all age groups.  To book Hirschten for teaching or public speaking email: ahirschten@gmail(dot)com
